The Locust Plague: A Scary Story or a Message of Hope?

Possible Viewpont: Anglican Christian

Title: The Locust Plague: A Scary Story or a Message of Hope?

Introduction:
Today, we are going to learn about a passage from the Bible, specifically from the book of Revelations, chapter 9. This passage may seem scary at first, but we will see how it can actually be a message of hope for us.

The Locust Plague:
Revelations 9 tells us about a time when scary-looking locusts come out of a bottomless pit. These locusts have the power to hurt people, but they are not allowed to hurt those who have the seal of God on their foreheads. They are given the power to torment people for five months, but they cannot kill them. These locusts are led by a powerful angel named Abaddon, which means ‘destruction’.

Message of Hope:
At first glance, this story might seem quite scary and confusing. However, it actually has a message of hope for us. It reminds us that even when we encounter scary or difficult things in life, God is still in control. Just like the locusts cannot harm those who have the seal of God, we can trust that God will protect and take care of us, no matter what we face.

Key Lesson:
The key lesson we can learn from this passage is that we don’t need to be afraid of scary or difficult things. Instead, we can trust in God’s protection and love for us. Just like the people who had the seal of God on their foreheads were not harmed by the locusts, we can have confidence that God is always with us, protecting and guiding us through whatever challenges we may face.

Activity:
Let’s create a craft of a seal to remind us of God’s protection. We’ll use some paper, markers, and stickers to create a seal that we can keep with us as a reminder that God is always watching over us.

Closing Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for always protecting and caring for us, even in scary or difficult times. Help us to remember your love and to trust in your goodness. Amen.

Remember, even though the story of the locust plague may seem scary, it is ultimately a message of hope and trust in God’s protection. We can always rely on Him to take care of us, no matter what we face.

Object Lesson

Title: The Locust Plague: A Scary Story or a Message of Hope?

Props needed:
1. A toy locust or a picture of a locust
2. A small toy trumpet or a picture of a trumpet
3. A small toy crown or a picture of a crown
4. A small toy scorpion or a picture of a scorpion
5. A colorful sticker or a picture of a seal

Presentation:
Begin by showing the children the toy locust or a picture of a locust. Ask them if they know what a locust is and if they have ever seen one. Explain to them that locusts can be scary because they can eat all the plants and crops in their path, which can be a big problem for farmers.

Then, show the children the small toy trumpet or a picture of a trumpet. Ask if they know what a trumpet is used for and if they have ever heard one being played. Explain to them that in the Bible, a trumpet is used as a symbol to announce something important.

Next, show the children the small toy crown or a picture of a crown. Ask if they know what a crown is and who wears it. Explain that a crown is a symbol of royalty and is usually worn by kings and queens.

After that, show the children the small toy scorpion or a picture of a scorpion. Ask if they know what a scorpion is and if they have ever seen one. Explain that scorpions have a sting that can be very painful, so they can be scary creatures.

Finally, show the children a colorful sticker or a picture of a seal. Ask if they know what a seal is used for and if they have ever seen one. Explain that a seal can be used to close a letter or a package, and it is also used to show that something is official or important.

Now that you have introduced the props, you can tell the story of the locust plague from Revelation 9. As you tell the story, use the props to illustrate the different parts of the story. For example, use the locust to show how they covered the earth, use the trumpet to show how they were announced, use the crown to show the authority of their leader, use the scorpion to show their sting, and use the seal to show that some people were protected from their harm.

After telling the story, ask the children if they think the locust plague is a scary story or a message of hope. Explain to them that even though the locust plague was a scary thing, it is also a message of hope because it teaches us that God will always protect and take care of His people, just like those who were sealed in the story. Encourage the children to trust in God and to find hope in Him, even when things seem scary.

Craft Idea

Craft: Make Your Own Locust Plague

Supplies:
– Brown paper lunch bags
– Green construction paper
– Scissors
– Glue
– Markers
– Googly eyes
– Pipe cleaners

Instructions:

1. Before the lesson, cut out several oval shapes from the green construction paper. These will be the locust bodies.

2. During the lesson, explain the story of the locust plague in Revelations 9. Discuss how it may seem scary, but ultimately it is a message of hope and a reminder of God’s power.

3. After the lesson, hand out brown paper lunch bags to each child. Instruct them to cut out wings from the green construction paper and glue them to the sides of the bag.

4. Then, have the children glue the oval shapes to the front of the bag to represent the locust bodies.

5. Next, give each child googly eyes and glue to attach them to the top of the bag.

6. Finally, have the children use markers to draw on details like the locust’s legs and mouth. They can also use pipe cleaners to create antennae for their locusts.

7. Once they have finished their locust crafts, have them reflect on the lesson and talk about how they can find hope in God’s power, even in difficult or scary situations.

This craft not only provides a fun and creative activity for the children, but also reinforces the message of hope from the lesson in Revelations 9.
