Celebrating New Life in Jesus: The Hope of Easter

Possible Viewpont: Evangelical Christian

Lesson Title: Celebrating New Life in Jesus: The Hope of Easter

Objective: The objective of this lesson is to help young children understand the meaning of Easter and what it means to celebrate the new life we have in Jesus.

Introduction: As Easter approaches, we see bunnies, eggs, and candy filling up the stores. But Easter is not really about these things. Easter is all about Jesus Christ! The Bible tells us that Jesus died on the cross and rose again three days later. This is why we celebrate Easter: to celebrate the new life we have in Jesus!

Bible Story: Read John 20:1-18 to the children. This is the story of Jesus’ resurrection.

Discussion:

-Ask the children about the story they just heard.

-What happened to Jesus on the cross?

-What happened on the third day?

-Why is it important that Jesus rose from the dead?

-What does it mean to have new life in Jesus?

-How can we celebrate the new life we have in Jesus this Easter?

Activities:

Coloring Page: Provide the children with an Easter-themed coloring page that they can color while they listen to the story or after discussion.

Easter Basket Craft: Give the children a brown paper bag to decorate with Easter stickers, paint, or markers. When they have finished, fill the bag with small toys, trinkets, and candy as a reminder that Easter is a celebration of the new life we have in Jesus.

Closing: Pray together, thanking God for the new life we have in Jesus and that we can celebrate this Easter. Remind them that Easter is not about bunnies or chocolate, but about Jesus and the new life we have in Him!

Title: Celebrating New Life in Jesus: The Hope of Easter

Audience: Young Children

Objective: To teach children the significance of Easter and the hope of new life in Jesus

Props Needed:

1. A plastic egg
2. Potting soil
3. Grass seeds
4. Watering can
5. A small planter or pot

Presentation:

1. Begin by showing the plastic egg to the children and ask them if they know what it symbolizes. Tell them that the egg represents new life, just like how Jesus was resurrected on Easter Sunday and gave us new life in Him.

2. Next, show them the potting soil and explain that it is where we plant the grass seeds. You can tell them that just like how we need to nurture the soil, we also need to nurture our faith in Jesus.

3. Then, give each child a small planter or pot filled with potting soil and a packet of grass seeds. Ask them to sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil.

4. Use the watering can to water the soil and the seeds, explaining to the children that water is like the Holy Spirit that strengthens our faith and helps us grow in Jesus.

5. Lastly, tell the children to keep watering the seeds and watch as they grow into beautiful grass. Explain that just like how the grass gives us new life and beauty, Jesus gives us new life and hope in Him.

Conclusion:

In this illustration, children will learn that just as the grass grows from a small seed, they too can grow in their faith in Jesus. They will be reminded that Easter is a celebration of new life and hope that Jesus brings to us.

Craft Idea

Title: Paper Plate Easter Crucifixion Scene

Supplies:
– Paper plates
– Brown, green, blue, and yellow construction paper
– Scissors
– Glue
– Black marker

Instructions:

1. Cut a half-inch strip off the bottom of the paper plate and set it aside for later. This will be used to create the base for the scene.

2. Tear the remainder of the plate in half vertically to create the background for the scene. Use the blue construction paper to cover the top half of the plate and the green construction paper to cover the bottom half.

3. Cut out a few small squares from the yellow construction paper to create the sun in the sky. Glue them onto the top of the blue construction paper.

4. For the cross, take a piece of brown construction paper and draw a cross shape onto it. Cut it out.

5. Cut out two small human shapes from the brown construction paper, one for Jesus and one for the soldier. Glue them onto the cross.

6. Cut out a small square from the green construction paper to create the piece of land on which the scene is taking place. Glue this to the center of the scene.

7. Cut out a small tomb from the brown construction paper and glue it to the left side of the scene. Draw a small stone in front of the tomb using the black marker.

8. Take the small strip of paper plate that was set aside earlier and fold it in half to create a stand for the scene. Glue it to the back of the scene, so it can be displayed on a flat surface.

9. Finish off the scene by adding any additional details that you like with the black marker. This could include clouds in the sky, grass around the base of the cross or a trail leading away from the tomb.

This activity is perfect for young children as it is simple enough for them to follow along and creates a great way to showcase the story visually. The lesson can be tied in by talking about the important part of Easter being the celebration of new life and the hope through Jesus’ resurrection. You can discuss how Jesus gave up his life, but also rose again bringing hope and new life to the world, and this scene depicts a moment of great significance in that story.
