How Lutherans and Evangelicals view Intercession

Lutheran view on Intercession:
In the Lutheran tradition, intercession is seen as a way of participating in Christ’s ministry of reconciliation. Lutherans believe that Christians are called to intercede for others, both living and dead, and that prayer is a powerful tool for this. Lutherans also believe that intercession should be based on the teachings of the Bible and the example of Christ, and that it should be done with humility and in accordance with God’s will.

Evangelical view on Intercession:
In the Evangelical tradition, intercession is seen as a way of standing in the gap for others and bringing their needs before God. Evangelicals often emphasize the importance of specific, heartfelt prayers and believe that intercession can have a tangible impact on people’s lives. However, some Evangelicals may be more cautious about praying for the dead or believing that intercession is necessary for salvation, emphasizing instead the importance of a personal relationship with God.

Bible Verses About Intercession

1 Timothy 2:1-4 – “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

Romans 8:26-27 – “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

1 Samuel 12:23 – “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.”

James 5:13-16 – “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Ephesians 6:18 – “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
