How Evangelicals and Orthodoxs view Miracles

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Evangelical View on Miracles:

Evangelicals believe in the supernatural and that miracles are a real part of the Christian faith. They believe that miracles are signs and wonders that confirm the truth of the gospel and God’s power. Evangelicals also believe that miracles are gifts from God and can be experienced today through prayer and faith. They interpret the Bible literally and believe that the miracles described in the Bible actually happened.

Orthodox View on Miracles:

In Orthodox Christianity, miracles are not seen as signs or proofs of the faith. Instead, they are viewed as expressions of God’s love and compassion for his people. Orthodox Christians believe that miracles can occur, but only through the intercession of a saint or by the direct will of God. Unlike Evangelicals, Orthodox Christians do not believe that miracles are necessary for someone to have faith, nor do they believe that miracles need to be “proved” as historically true.

Bible Verses About Miracles

John 2:11 – “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.”

John 9:1-7 – “As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.”

Matthew 14:14 – “When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

Matthew 19:26 – “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””

Mark 9:23 – “And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.””

Acts 3:6-8 – “But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.”

Acts 4:29-31 – “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.”
