How Evangelicals and LDS / Mormons view Baptism

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Introduction: Both Evangelical and LDS / Mormon denominations believe in baptism as an essential part of Christian faith. However, there are some significant differences in their beliefs and practices when it comes to baptism.

Evangelical view on Baptism: Evangelical Christians believe that baptism is a public declaration of one’s faith in Jesus Christ. It is a symbolic act that demonstrates the inward change that has taken place in the heart of the believer. Baptism is not necessary for salvation but is a commandment given by Jesus to His followers to publicly declare their faith in Him.

Evangelicals typically practice believer’s baptism, which means that only those who have made a personal profession of faith in Christ are baptized. This practice is based on the belief that baptism is not a means of salvation but rather an outward expression of an inward transformation that has already taken place.

LDS / Mormon view on Baptism: The LDS / Mormon Church views baptism as an essential part of the process of salvation. They believe that baptism is necessary for the forgiveness of sins and is the first step in the process of becoming a member of the church.

Mormons practice baptism by immersion (fully submerged in water) as they believe this is the method of baptism practiced by Jesus Christ. Mormon baptism is also done on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized during their lifetime.

Differences: One of the primary differences between these two denominations’ views on baptism is its perceived significance. Evangelicals view baptism as a symbol of salvation, while Mormons see it as a necessary step in the process of salvation. Additionally, Evangelicals practice believer’s baptism, while Mormons practice baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

Another difference is the method of baptism, with Mormons practicing immersion baptism while Evangelicals may also practice other forms of baptism such as sprinkling or pouring.

Inspiration: Regardless of these differences, both Evangelical and LDS / Mormon denominations see baptism as essential for their faith practices. Baptism is a way of publicly declaring one’s faith in Jesus Christ and of being welcomed into the community of believers. As believers, it is important that we focus on the common ground we share in our faith in Jesus Christ and live out our belief in Him in our everyday lives.

Bible Verses About Baptism

Evangelical:

Mark 16:16 – “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”

Acts 2:38 – “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 6:3-4 – “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

Colossians 2:11-12 – “In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self—ruled by the flesh —was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”

LDS / Mormon:

2 Nephi 31:5-10 – “And now, if the Lamb of God, he being holy, should have need to be baptized by water, to fulfil all righteousness, O then, how much more need have we, being unholy, to be baptized, yea, even by water! And now, I would ask of you, my beloved brethren, wherein the Lamb of God did fulfil all righteousness in being baptized by water? Know ye not that he was holy? But notwithstanding he being holy, he showeth unto the children of men that, according to the flesh he humbleth himself before the Father, and witnesseth unto the Father that he would be obedient unto him in keeping his commandments. Wherefore, after he was baptized with water the Holy Ghost descended upon him in the form of a dove. And again, it showeth unto the children of men the straitness of the path, and the narrowness of the gate, by which they should enter, he having set the example before them. And he said unto the children of men: Follow thou me. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the commandments of the Father?”

Moroni 8:10 – “Behold I say unto you that this thing shall ye teach—repentance and baptism unto those who are accountable and capable of committing sin; yea, teach parents that they must repent and be baptized, and humble themselves as their little children, and they shall all be saved with their little children.”

Doctrine and Covenants 20:73 – “The person who is called of God and has authority from Jesus Christ to baptize, shall go down into the water with the person who has presented himself or herself for baptism, and shall say, calling him or her by name: Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”
