How Catholics and Methodists view Abortion

Catholic view on Abortion:
The Catholic Church considers abortion to be a grave moral evil and a violation of the fifth commandment, “Thou shall not kill”. The Church teaches that human life begins at the moment of conception and must be protected and respected from that moment until natural death. Therefore, abortion is never allowed under any circumstances, including cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at risk.

Methodist view on Abortion:
The Methodist Church acknowledges that abortion is a complex and sensitive issue, and recognizes that different individuals will have different opinions on the matter. Methodists believe that life is sacred and that each human being is of infinite value, but they also recognize that there may be situations where abortion may be the lesser of two evils. The Church supports access to safe, legal and rare abortions under certain circumstances, such as when the mother’s life is at risk or in cases of rape or incest. Methodist doctrine encourages individuals to make their own moral and ethical judgments based on their individual circumstances, in consultation with their doctors and spiritual advisers.

Bible Verses About Abortion

Psalm 139:13-16

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

This verse emphasizes that God is the one who creates human life, and that He is involved in the process from the very beginning. It also suggests that each individual life is unique and valuable to God.

Jeremiah 1:5

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Similar to Psalm 139, this verse shows that God has a plan for each individual’s life, even before they are born. It also implies that each life is significant and should not be ended prematurely.

Exodus 20:13

“You shall not murder.”

While this verse does not directly reference abortion, it is often used as a basis for the argument against it. Many believe that abortion qualifies as murder, and therefore goes against one of God’s commandments.

Proverbs 24:11-12

“Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, ‘But we knew nothing about this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?”

This verse encourages individuals to speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves or protect themselves. It suggests that it is our responsibility to protect and defend the innocent, even if it may be difficult or unpopular to do so.
