The Chi Rho: Jesus Special Sign

Possible Viewpont: Catholic

The Chi Rho: Jesus Special Sign

Age group: 4–8 years
Time: 15–30 minutes

Welcome
Hello, friends! Today we will learn about a special sign that reminds us of Jesus. This sign is called the Chi Rho. It is a loving little symbol that many Christians have used for a very long time.

What is the Chi Rho?
– The Chi Rho is made from two letters: Chi (which looks like an X) and Rho (which looks like a P).
– When the X and the P are put together, they make a sign that stands for Christ. Christ means Jesus, our Lord.
– Long ago, Christians used this sign like a little “name” or “signature” for Jesus. We still see it in churches, on cloths, stained glass, crosses, and books.

A short story
A long time ago, people who loved Jesus drew this sign to remember Him. Once, a leader named Constantine saw the sign before a battle and put it on his soldiers’ shields. He trusted that Jesus was with him. After that, many Christians used the Chi Rho to show they belong to Jesus.

What the Chi Rho teaches us
– It tells us Jesus is with us.
– It reminds us to love others like Jesus loves us.
– It helps us remember that we are part of God’s family.

Things we can do (activities)
1) Make a Chi Rho craft
– Materials: paper, crayons or markers, scissors (adult help), glue, a popsicle stick (optional).
– Steps: Fold a paper in half. Draw a big X across the paper. Then draw a P over the X so the round part sits on the right. Color the letters. Cut out and glue to a popsicle stick to make a sign to hold during prayer time.
– Safety: Adults should help with cutting.

2) Coloring or tracing
– Draw a big X. Draw a P overlapping the X. Color bright colors and put little hearts or crosses around it.

3) Church scavenger hunt
– In our church, quietly look for the Chi Rho on altar cloths, stained glass, hymnals, or vestments. (Always be quiet and respectful when in church.)

A simple song (to the tune of a familiar short melody)
– “Chi Rho, Chi Rho, Jesus’ sign, Chi Rho, Chi Rho, He is mine.”
Sing it softly and clap along.

Short prayer
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for your special sign, the Chi Rho.
Help us remember you love us always.
Teach us to be kind and brave, and to follow you every day.
Amen.

Leader tips for adults
– Keep language simple and give children time to draw and ask questions.
– Show examples of the Chi Rho in books or pictures so children can see different styles.
– Encourage respect: explain the Chi Rho is a holy sign and is not a toy.

Closing
The Chi Rho is a small, special sign that points us to Jesus. When we see it, we can think of Jesus’ love and remember to be kind and brave like Him.

Worship Music for Lesson

1) Christ, Be Our Light (Bernadette Farrell) — simple, repetitive refrain about Christ’s light; works well to connect the Chi Rho as a sign of Jesus’ presence and light for children.

2) Jesus Name Above All Names — a short, melodic praise song that emphasizes Jesus’ identity; easy for young children to learn and sing while introducing the special sign for Jesus.

3) Jesus Loves Me — classic, very child-friendly and reassuring; reinforces the message that the Chi Rho points to Jesus’ love for us.

4) This Little Light of Mine — an activity-friendly song about letting Jesus’ light shine; useful for a tactile or movement activity showing the Chi Rho as a symbol of Christ’s light.

Object Lesson

Title: The Chi Rho — Jesus’ Special Sign
Age range: 3–7 years
Time: 8–12 minutes
Group size: small group to whole class (adaptable)

Goal: Help young children recognize the Chi Rho symbol (the letters X and P overlapped) and understand it as a simple reminder that Jesus is with us.

Needed props
– Large sheets of paper or poster board (one for display)
– Thick marker or felt-tip pens (dark color)
– Two large letter cards: one with a big X, one with a big P (laminated if possible)
– Pipe cleaners or craft sticks and bendable wire (to make 3-D letters)
– Velcro dots or tape (to attach letters together)
– Small felt board or magnetic board (optional)
– Pre-cut card-stock circles (one per child) and hole punch (for a simple craft necklace)
– Yarn or ribbon for necklaces
– Stickers, crayons, or stamps (to decorate each card)
– Small box or “mystery bag” for a reveal
– Optional: a puppet or stuffed animal to “ask” questions
– Safety: child-safe scissors and adult supervision for small parts

Presentation plan (step-by-step)

1) Warm-up and Hook (1–2 minutes)
– Hold the mystery box or bag. Say: “I have a special sign in my mystery box. It tells us about someone very special — Jesus. Let’s find out what it is!”
– Ask a simple question to engage them: “What kind of signs do you know?” (stop signs, heart shapes, crosses, etc.)

2) Show the letters separately (1–2 minutes)
– Bring out the large X card. Say: “This is the letter that looks like two lines crossing. We call it an X. Can you make an X with your arms?” (Let children try — arms crossed)
– Bring out the large P card. Say: “This one is P. Can you show me a big arm and a little curve with your hand?” (Children try; laugh and encourage.)

3) The Surprise: Make the Chi Rho (2 minutes)
– Put the X and P cards on the felt board or tape them to the poster so they overlap with the P placed on top of the left arm of the X so the shapes combine. Or take the pipe cleaners/craft sticks and overlap them to form the Chi Rho.
– Reveal it with a short, excited phrase: “Look! When X and P come together they make a special sign called the Chi Rho. It looks like this.” Show the combined symbol close to the children.

4) Simple Teaching Point (1 minute)
– Say in simple language: “Christians used the Chi Rho as a sign for Jesus long ago. When we see this sign, it helps us remember Jesus is with us and loves us.”
– Use a puppet or stuffed animal to ask: “How does that make you feel?” Let one or two children answer briefly.

5) Interactive Repeat and Movement (1–2 minutes)
– Teach a short chant or refrain: Leader says “Chi Rho!” Kids respond “Jesus’ special sign!” Repeat two or three times, clapping once between.
– Ask children to make the X with arms, then pretend to add a P by placing one arm down and curving the other hand in front of their chest — simple mimicry is fine.

6) Quick craft (optional, 5–10 minutes total)
– Give each child a pre-cut card-stock circle. Have a large printed Chi Rho simple stencil or stamp they can trace/print on the circle (or give pre-printed circles to younger children).
– Let them color/decorate with stickers and crayons.
– Hole-punch the top and string yarn through to make a necklace. Tell them: “Wear this necklace to help you remember Jesus is with you — it’s His special sign!”
– Safety note: Adults should handle hole punches and scissors; supervise small parts (stickers, beads).

7) Wrap-up (30 seconds)
– Hold up your Chi Rho on the poster and the children’s circles. Say: “When we see the Chi Rho, we’ll remember Jesus is with us. Let’s say it together one more time: ‘Chi Rho — Jesus’ special sign!’”
– Offer a brief blessing or a gentle closing line appropriate to your setting (for example: “May you remember that Jesus loves you every day.”)

Variations and tips
– For toddlers: Skip the craft; just do the mystery box, show the big letters, and a simple song/movement.
– For slightly older kids: Briefly explain that “Chi” and “Rho” are Greek letters (chi looks like X, rho looks like P) and that early Christians used the symbol.
– If you have a felt board or magnetic letters, let two children come up and place the letters together to form the Chi Rho.
– Make a large printable poster of the Chi Rho ahead of time and hide part of it under a cloth — pull the cloth off for a dramatic reveal.
– If you must use food, an optional snack idea is a cookie decorated with the symbol, but keep allergies and rules in mind.

Safety reminders
– Always supervise small items like pipe cleaners, beads, and yarn.
– Use blunt craft sticks or bendable pipe cleaners rather than sharp craft materials.
– Keep crafts short so young children don’t get restless.

Short sample script (you can use/adapt)
“I brought a mystery sign today! Who likes surprises? (pause) Here’s the first letter — an X. Make an X with your arms! Now here’s a P. Can you make a big arm and a little curve? When we put these two letters together, we make the Chi Rho, Jesus’ special sign. It helps us remember Jesus is with us and loves us. Let’s say it together: ‘Chi Rho — Jesus’ special sign!’”

That’s everything you need to present a short, hands-on illustration of the Chi Rho that young children will understand and remember.

Craft Idea

Chi Rho Suncatcher (5–10 minutes)

Supplies
– Clear contact paper (pre-cut into ~6″ squares) or clear laminating sheet
– Black construction paper or cardstock frames with a Chi Rho-shaped window already cut out (leader should pre-cut the Chi Rho shape)
– Small squares of colored tissue paper (assorted colors)
– Scissors (for leader)
– Hole punch (leader or adult)
– String or ribbon for hanging
– Metallic marker or regular marker (optional, for writing names or a short phrase)

Quick explanation to give before the craft
The Chi Rho is made from the Greek letters chi (X) and rho (looks like a P). It is a special sign Christians used long ago to show Jesus’ name (the first two letters of “Christos”). Today our suncatcher will let Jesus’ light shine through the colors, reminding us that Jesus is the light of the world.

Steps
1. Lay a pre-cut piece of clear contact paper sticky side up on the table.
2. Give each child a black frame with the Chi Rho window already cut out. Place the frame over the sticky contact paper so the Chi Rho hole shows the sticky area.
3. Let the child press colored tissue paper squares onto the sticky area inside the Chi Rho cutout. Encourage them to overlap colors and fill the whole shape.
4. When filled, carefully cover with the backing piece of contact paper or a second clear sheet so everything is sealed (an adult can help press and trim any extra).
5. Punch a hole in the top of the frame, tie a piece of string, and hang it in a sunny window.
6. Optional: let children write their name or “Chi Rho = Jesus’ sign” on the frame with a marker. End with a short prayer thanking Jesus for being our light.

Safety and adaptations
– Pre-cut the Chi Rho windows so kids only need to stick tissue paper—this keeps the project within 5–10 minutes.
– Use adult help for scissors and hole punch.
– For very young children, leader can prepare frames with some tissue already attached so they only finish filling a few spots.
