Taking Responsibility for Ourselves and Others

Title: Taking Responsibility for Ourselves and Others

Bible Passage: Genesis 7

Lesson Aim: The aim of this lesson is to teach children the concept of responsibility and how they can take responsibility for themselves and others, just as Noah did in Genesis 7.

Introduction: As Christians, we know that God has given us a responsibility to look after the world and the people around us. Today we will learn about someone who took this responsibility seriously and learn from his example.

Lesson Body:

1. Noah’s Responsibility: In Genesis 7, we read about the story of Noah and the ark. God instructed Noah to build an ark and gather animals on it because He was going to flood the earth. Noah took this responsibility seriously and put in his best effort to prepare for the flood.

2. Our Responsibility: We may not have to build an ark like Noah did, but we have a responsibility to take care of ourselves and others. This means that we should take care of our bodies, listen to our parents and teachers, take care of our belongings, and help others in need.

3. Responsibility towards the Environment: God has given us the earth as a gift to live on. We have the responsibility to take care of it by reducing waste, conserving resources, and not littering. We should also take care of animals, plants, and other living things around us.

4. Responsibility towards Others: We should help our friends and family members when they are in need. We can also help people we don’t know by donating to charities or volunteering our time. Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and taking responsibility for others is a way of showing that love.

Conclusion: As we learned from the story of Noah, taking responsibility is important for our lives and the lives of others. We should take care of ourselves, others, and the world around us, just as God has entrusted us to do. Let us pray that God gives us the strength and wisdom to take responsibility and be a positive influence in the world.

Object Lesson

Title: “Noah Takes Responsibility”

Props needed:
– A toy boat
– A stuffed animal or doll
– A small bucket or container
– A few small items (such as toy food or blocks)

Introduction:
Tell the children that today’s story is about a man named Noah who had an important task to take care of. Ask if they have ever been asked to take care of something important before, like a pet or a younger sibling.

Illustration:
1. Show the children the toy boat and explain that God told Noah to build a big boat called an ark because there was going to be a big flood. It was Noah’s responsibility to build the ark and make sure he and his family, along with all the animals, were safe inside.
2. Bring out the stuffed animal or doll and explain that just like Noah had to take responsibility for himself and his family, he also had to take responsibility for the animals. He had to gather them and make sure they had food and water for the long journey.
3. Have the children add the small items to the bucket or container, explaining that this represents the food that Noah collected for the animals.
4. Ask the children if they think it was easy or hard for Noah to take responsibility for so many things. Encourage them to think of times when they have had to take responsibility, and how doing so can be challenging but also very important.

Conclusion:
Remind the children that just as Noah had to take responsibility for himself, his family, and the animals, we also have the responsibility to take care of ourselves and those around us. We can do this by being kind to others, helping out when we can, and making good choices that keep us and others safe.

Craft Idea

Craft Idea: Ark of Responsibility

Supplies:
– Popsicle sticks
– Glue
– Construction paper (blue, green, and brown)
– Cotton balls
– Scissors

Instructions:

1. Begin by gluing 10 popsicle sticks together in a straight line to create the base of the ark.
2. Glue 2 popsicle sticks perpendicular to the base, one toward the front and one toward the back, to create the walls of the ark.
3. Cut blue construction paper to fit the bottom of the ark and glue it in place.
4. Cut green construction paper into small rectangular shapes to create trees and glue them to the bottom of the ark.
5. Cut brown construction paper to create a door for the ark and glue it in place.
6. Finally, glue cotton balls on top of the ark to represent the animals and creatures that were saved because Noah took responsibility for building the ark.

Discussion:
As the children create their arks, ask them if they think it was easy for Noah to build the ark and take responsibility for the safety of all the animals. Encourage them to talk about times when they have had to take responsibility for themselves and others. Discuss with them why it is important to take responsibility and how it pleases God. Share with them that God wants us to care for and protect all that He has entrusted to us.

Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for trusting us with the responsibility of taking care of ourselves and others. Help us to always know what is right and have the courage to make the right choices. Amen.
