From Bad Choices to New Life with Jesus

Possible Viewpont: Evangelical Christian

Title: From Bad Choices to New Life with Jesus

Age group: Young children (ages 4–8)

Opening
– Welcome the children and say a short prayer asking God to help everyone listen and understand.

Memory verse
– Romans 6:23 (NIV): “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
– Kid-friendly paraphrase: “Wrong choices bring sad results, but God gives us a free gift—life forever with Jesus.”

Simple teaching (use words children understand)
– Sin = wrong choices: things like being selfish, lying, or hurting others. We all make wrong choices sometimes.
– Wages = what you earn: if you do a job, you get pay. The verse says wrong choices bring a sad result.
– Gift = something given for free: Jesus gives us something we don’t earn. He gives us new life—friendship with God, forgiveness, and forever life with Him.
– The best news: Jesus loves us, forgives our wrong choices when we turn to Him, and gives us His gift. We don’t have to try to earn it—we accept it by believing in Jesus.

Short story to make it simple
– Tell a short, concrete story:
“Sam had a toy that belonged to his friend. He took it without asking and broke it. Sam felt bad and knew he had to face the problem. He expected to be punished. But then his friend said, ‘It’s okay—I forgive you. You can be my friend again.’ Sam felt like a new person. That’s like Jesus. Our wrong choices are real and have results, but Jesus forgives and gives us new life when we say sorry and trust Him.”

Object lesson: Coins and Gift Box
– Show a small pile of coins and a closed gift box.
– Say: “Coins are like wages—you earn them for doing something. A gift box is something you get even if you didn’t earn it. Romans 6:23 says wrong choices bring a sad result, but God gives us a gift through Jesus. We can’t earn this gift; Jesus gives it because He loves us.”
– Let each child hold a coin and then the gift box (or a wrapped candy as a symbol) to feel the difference.

Simple activity (1)
– “Wages or Gift?” sorting game:
– Prepare picture cards: some show wrong choices (e.g., taking, lying, pushing) and some show good gifts (e.g., friend holding hands, heart, cross).
– Children put each card in the “Wages” pile (things that bring trouble) or the “Gift” pile (things Jesus gives: forgiveness, friendship with God).
– Talk about each one briefly.

Simple activity (2)
– “Forgiveness Wash” (brief and clean):
– Put a light washable marker dot on each child’s finger or a paper heart with a dot to show a “stain” from wrong choices.
– Use a wet wipe or water and soap to wash it off while saying, “Jesus forgives and makes us clean.”
– Emphasize: “Jesus can wash away our wrong choices when we ask.”

Questions to ask children
– What does “wages” mean?
– What is the gift God gives?
– How can we get the gift of new life? (Answer: Believe in Jesus, tell Him we’re sorry, and trust Him.)

Prayer (lead the children)
– Short prayer example:
“Dear God, thank You that You love us. We’re sorry for our wrong choices. Please forgive us. Thank You for the gift of new life through Jesus. Help us to follow Jesus every day. Amen.”
– If any child wants to pray a prayer to accept Jesus, let them pray with the teacher or leader in a quiet moment. If they ask to become Christians, make sure an adult leader or parent follows up with them.

Take-home idea for parents
– A short note: “Today we learned Romans 6:23. Wrong choices have sad results, but Jesus gives us a free gift—eternal life—when we trust Him. Ask your child to show you the gift box and tell how Jesus forgives. If your child wants to talk about accepting Jesus, please speak with your teacher or leader.”

Closing
– Sing a simple song like “Jesus Loves Me” or “This Little Light of Mine.”
– Remind the children: “Even when we make bad choices, Jesus wants to forgive us and give us new life. We can always talk to Him.”

Worship Music for Lesson

Object Lesson

Title: From Bad Choices to New Life with Jesus (Romans 6:23) — illustration for young children using props

Key idea for the children: Doing wrong brings sad consequences, but God gives the gift of new life through Jesus.

Needed props (choose sizes appropriate for your age group and avoid small choking hazards):
– Small clear jar or coin purse with a few large, toy coins or big paper “coins” (to show wages)
– A small paper or real wilted flower (or a small brown paper flower) to show what happens after bad choices
– A bright, fresh artificial flower or small potted plant to show new life
– A small wrapped gift box (big enough to be safe) with a simple item inside: a paper heart that says “Jesus,” or a small wooden cross, or a key labeled “JESUS”
– A short length of soft rope or a toy chain (large links) and a pair of plastic safety scissors or a big paper cut line to “cut” the rope
– A simple sign or card that says “SIN” or “BAD CHOICES” (large letters)
– A simple poster card with the verse in very short kid-friendly wording: “The wages of sin is death, but God’s gift is forever life through Jesus.” (Keep the actual verse Romans 6:23 handy to read or show.)
– Optional: small paper hearts or stickers for each child to take home

Preparation notes:
– Make sure props are large and safe for your youngest children; tape small parts inside the gift box so nothing falls out.
– Practice the flow a couple of times so the actions are smooth and quick (young children have short attention spans).
– Keep the tone gentle and hopeful. If children ask questions about “death,” use simple words like “being apart from God” or “not having the kind of life God wants for us,” and be ready to reassure them.

How to present (simple script and actions)
1) Gather the children close and show the verse card. Read a very short version aloud: “Romans 6:23 says: ‘Bad choices bring death, but God’s gift is life through Jesus.’” Then translate: “That means when we make wrong choices (we’ll call them ‘bad choices’), there are bad results. But God gives us a wonderful gift — new life — through Jesus.”

2) Show the “SIN / BAD CHOICES” sign. Ask: “What is a bad choice?” Let one or two children answer briefly (e.g., “not sharing, telling a lie, hitting”). Affirm their answers.

3) Bring out the coin purse or jar and the toy coins. Say: “These coins are like wages — something you earn or get because of what you do.” Put a few coins into the jar as you say: “When we make bad choices, we earn bad things.” Put the wilted flower next to the jar and say gently: “The Bible tells us the wages of bad choices is death. That’s a big word, but we can say: bad choices can lead to being sad and being away from God.” (Show a calm, compassionate face — not scary.)

4) Show the rope or chain around the wilted flower or wrap it loosely around your hand: “Bad choices can feel like being tied up — we get stuck.” Ask the children if anyone has felt stuck when they were having a hard time or disobeyed a parent. Keep answers short and reassuring.

5) Shift the tone to hope. Hold up the wrapped gift box and smile. Say: “But look! God doesn’t leave us stuck. The verse also says God has a gift.” Open the box slowly so children lean in. Inside show the paper heart that says “Jesus,” the small cross, or the key labeled “JESUS.” Pull out the bright flower at the same time.

6) Explain in very simple words: “Jesus is God’s gift. He helps cut the ropes. He gives new life.” Use the scissors to “cut” the rope or pretend to unlock the chain with the key, and remove the rope from the wilted flower, then replace the wilted flower with the bright flower. Say: “See? Jesus gives new, happy life — a life with God!”

7) Repeat the short summary with actions so children can remember:
– Show coin purse: “Bad choices = wages”
– Show rope: “Bad choices can tie us up”
– Show gift: “But God gives a gift—Jesus”
– Show bright flower: “Gift = new life!”

Invite the children to repeat a short line after you two times: “Bad choices bring sadness; Jesus gives new life!” (Keep it cheerful and brief.)

8) Interactive idea (2–3 children at a time; keep it quick):
– Give a child a paper “bad choice” (a small paper with a sad face) and let them drop it into the jar.
– Then have them help you open the gift and pull out a paper heart or cross and the bright flower to show Jesus giving new life.
– Or let them come and pretend to cut the rope with big-motion scissors (safety scissors not actually cutting the rope — or use a paper ribbon that you do cut ahead of time).

9) Closing and simple invitation:
– Say: “Romans 6:23 tells us two things: bad choices bring bad results, but God gives the gift of life through Jesus. If you want Jesus to be your friend and help you when you make bad choices, you can talk to Him. Would you like to pray? If you do, we’ll say a short prayer together.” (Offer a short, optional prayer the children can repeat, such as: “Jesus, thank you for being my friend. Please help me. Thank you for your gift of new life. Amen.”)
– Make sure to invite kids who want to talk more to stay after or tell their parents so an adult can follow up.

10) Hand out a simple take-home: a small paper heart, sticker, or a one-sentence card that says the kid-friendly version of Romans 6:23 and a short reminder: “Jesus gives new life.”

Timing:
– Total time: about 5–8 minutes for young children. Keep it lively and visual.

Safety and pastoral notes:
– Avoid frightening descriptions of death; focus on the idea of being separated from God and the hope Jesus brings.
– Always offer parental follow-up for children who respond emotionally or want to pray.
– Supervise all prop use and avoid small parts for toddlers.

This simple, visual demonstration uses earning/coins, a rope, a wilted/bright flower, and a gift to show the contrast in Romans 6:23: bad choices lead to bad consequences, but God’s gift through Jesus is new life.

Craft Idea

Title: Wages-to-Gift Flip Card (5–10 minutes)

Supply list
– 1 small piece of construction paper or a half sheet of cardstock per child (approx. 4″ x 6″)
– crayons or markers
– stickers (coins, hearts, crosses, or simple stars) — optional
– glue stick or tape
– scissors (teacher use or supervised if needed)
– pre-printed small strip with “ROMANS 6:23” or “For the wages of sin is death; the gift of God is eternal life.” (optional, printed large so kids can glue it)

What this shows: The closed side shows what bad choices (sin) give us — the “wages.” When we open the card we see the gift of new life through Jesus.

Steps
1. Fold the paper in half widthwise so it becomes a small card (like a simple book).
2. On the front (closed side), help the children draw or place stickers of dark coins, an unhappy face, or scribbles. Above or below the drawing they can write (or you can pre-write) “WAGES” or the short phrase “Sin → Wages (death).”
3. Inside the card, have the children draw a bright picture: a cross, a smiling heart, sun, flowers or a person with arms raised. Use bright colors. Label it “GIFT” or “New Life in Jesus.”
4. If you have the pre-printed Romans 6:23 strip, glue it inside under the drawing or on the front. If not, write “Romans 6:23” somewhere on the card.
5. If time allows, let each child share one sentence: “Because of Jesus I can have new life,” or say a quick simple prayer together thanking Jesus for the gift of new life.

Talking points to use while making the craft (say in simple words)
– “Romans 6:23 says sin gives us a bad result, like wages. But God gives us a gift — new life with Jesus.”
– “The outside of the card shows the bad choice result. The inside shows the gift God gives when we turn to Jesus.”
– Encourage children that Jesus offers new life to everyone who asks Him for forgiveness.

Safety note
– Supervise scissors and small stickers. Keep craft materials age-appropriate.

Variation (if you have beads and string)
– Make a short necklace with one dark bead (for sin/wages) and one bright bead or cross bead (for the gift/new life). Say how Jesus changes our life from the dark bead to the bright bead.

This quick craft gives kids a simple, visual way to remember Romans 6:23: bad choices lead to wages, but God gives the gift of new life in Jesus.
