Title: Don’t Let Monsters Steal Your Joy

Theme: Overcoming our fears with the help of Jesus.

Bible Verse: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” – 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

Introduction: Ask the children if they have ever been afraid of monsters. Ask them to talk about what they think monsters are like and what makes them scary. Reassure them that there are no monsters in real life, but sometimes there are things that scare us.

Lesson:
Today, we will talk about monsters- the imaginary creatures we all fear. Monsters can come in many shapes and sizes. They can be big and scary or small and sneaky. They can hide in our closets or under our beds, making us feel afraid and unsafe.

But do you know what is even scarier than a monster? Fear itself! Fear can control us, and it can stop us from enjoying life to the fullest. Fear can make us feel like we are trapped or powerless.

But we don’t have to be afraid! When we have Jesus in our hearts, we have power, love, and self-discipline. Jesus can help us overcome our fears and give us joy and peace.

Let’s look at some examples of how Jesus helped people overcome their fears:

1. Jesus and the storm:
One day, Jesus and the disciples were on a boat, and a terrible storm came up. The waves were crashing, and the wind was blowing so hard that the boat was about to capsize. The disciples were scared and thought they were going to die. But Jesus calmed the storm and showed them that he had power over nature. He said, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). Jesus showed them that they could trust him no matter what was happening around them.

2. Jesus and the demon-possessed man:
One time, Jesus approached a man who was possessed by many demons. The man was so frightened and tormented that he was living in a graveyard. But Jesus had power over the demons and cast them out of the man. Afterwards, the man was free from fear and he praised Jesus for what he had done for him (Mark 5:1-20).

Conclusion:
We may not face monsters like the ones we imagine in our minds, but we do face real things in life that can make us scared. When we are afraid, we can turn to Jesus, who is always with us. He can help us conquer our fears and protect us from any harm. With Jesus on our side, we don’t have to be afraid of monsters or anything else. We can have joy and peace in our hearts, knowing that he loves us and is watching over us.

Object Lesson

Illustration: Don’t Let Monsters Steal Your Joy

Props needed:
– Small-medium sized stuffed animal monster
– Small gift wrapped box
– Balloon

How to present the illustration:
1. Introduce the topic of monsters and how they sometimes scare us or make us feel uncomfortable.
2. Show the stuffed animal monster and ask the children if they would be scared of it if they saw it in their room at night.
3. Explain that sometimes monsters can be things other than physical creatures, like a fear or worry that seems big and scary.
4. Show the gift wrapped box and ask the children what they think might be inside. Let them guess and get excited about what they think it could be.
5. When the box is opened, reveal a deflated balloon. Explain that sometimes things that we think will bring us joy or happiness end up being disappointing, like when we blow up a balloon and it pops.
6. Hold up the now inflated balloon and explain that we can’t let monsters or disappointments steal our joy. We have to keep believing in good things and making the most of what we have, even if it’s something as simple as a balloon.
7. End by encouraging the children to keep joy in their hearts and not let anything steal it away, like the monsters or disappointments that might come their way.

This illustration can help young children understand that monsters, fears, and disappointments are a part of life, but they don’t have to steal their happiness. By keeping a positive attitude and believing in good things, they can overcome whatever comes their way.
