information about the author of Proverbs 19:20-21

Proverbs 19:20-21 states:

“20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.
21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.”

From an evangelical Christian perspective, the Book of Proverbs is traditionally attributed to King Solomon, the son of David, who is renowned for his wisdom. Solomon is a central figure in the Hebrew Scriptures and is known for his role in building the Temple in Jerusalem, as well as for his many wise sayings and proverbs.

Key points regarding Solomon and the authorship of Proverbs include:

1. **Wisdom Literature**: The Book of Proverbs is classified as wisdom literature in the Bible. Evangelical scholars see it as a collection of sayings and teachings that provide practical guidance for living a godly and wise life. Solomon’s authorship fits this genre, as he is often depicted as the archetypal wise ruler.

2. **Solomon’s Legacy**: Solomon’s request for wisdom from God (1 Kings 3:5-14) is foundational to understanding his reputation. This divine gift enabled him to rule wisely and is believed to have influenced the collections of proverbs attributed to him.

3. **Instruction and Guidance**: Proverbs 19:20-21 emphasizes the importance of listening to advice and the ultimate sovereignty of God’s purpose over human plans. This aligns with evangelical teaching that values divine wisdom and guidance in decision-making and life’s plans.

4. **Collective Authorship**: While Solomon is recognized as a primary author, some evangelical perspectives acknowledge that other contributors may have added to the book over time, including leaders from later generations. This is particularly evident in the diverse styles and themes throughout Proverbs.

5. **Moral and Spiritual Instruction**: Evangelical interpretation sees Proverbs as offering not only practical wisdom for everyday life but also moral and spiritual truths that reflect God’s character and will. The verses in question highlight the importance of seeking counsel and recognizing God’s overarching plans.

Overall, the authorship of Proverbs, particularly with regard to specific verses like 19:20-21, points to Solomon’s role as a wise teacher and the book’s broader purpose of imparting divine wisdom to its readers.
