interview with the author of Deuteronomy 6:4-5

**Interviewer**: Thank you for joining us today! To start, could you tell us about one of the most central themes in your teachings?

**Author**: Of course! One of the most profound messages I convey is summed up in what I call the Shema. It’s found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5.

**Interviewer**: Oh, I’ve heard about the Shema! What does it say exactly?

**Author**: It starts with this declaration, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” This statement emphasizes the uniqueness and oneness of God. It’s critical for the people to understand that there is only one God, and this foundational truth shapes their identity and relationship with Him.

**Interviewer**: That’s powerful. And what comes next?

**Author**: Following that declaration, I instruct them to “love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” This is not just an emotional response; it encompasses their entire being—heart, soul, and strength. It’s about a total commitment and devotion.

**Interviewer**: Why do you think this message is so vital for the people?

**Author**: Loving God wholly is essential to living a faithful life. It fosters a deep relationship with Him, guiding their actions and decisions. It reinforces their covenant with God and helps them understand their responsibilities as His chosen people.

**Interviewer**: It sounds like a call to action.

**Author**: Exactly! It’s not just about belief; it’s about a way of life that reflects that belief. I want them to remember and internalize this command as they navigate their lives.

**Interviewer**: Thank you for sharing that insight! It’s clear why the Shema holds such a significant place in the hearts of so many.

**Author**: It truly does. It’s a call to daily devotion and a reminder of our relationship with God.

information about the author of Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 contains the well-known verses often referred to as the Shema, which states: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” From an evangelical Christian perspective, the authorship of Deuteronomy, and specifically this passage, is traditionally attributed to Moses.

### Context and Significance

1. **Mosaic Authorship**: Evangelical Christians generally believe that Moses is the primary author of the Pentateuch, which includes the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). This belief is rooted in both internal biblical references (such as Exodus 24:4, where Moses is said to have written down the laws) and historical tradition.

2. **Covenant and Law**: Deuteronomy serves as a reiteration of the law given to the Israelites, providing a framework for their covenant relationship with God. The Shema highlights monotheism and the importance of loving God, serving as a foundational statement of faith for both Judaism and Christianity.

3. **Theological Emphasis**: The Shema is significant for its emphasis on the heart, soul, and strength of the believer. Evangelical interpretation often stresses that loving God is not just an intellectual agreement but involves the totality of one’s being. This verse is frequently preached upon to encourage believers to prioritize their relationship with God.

4. **Cultural Impact**: The Shema has profound implications in Jewish tradition and is recited daily in prayers. For evangelicals, it underscores the importance of loving God wholeheartedly, serving as a guiding principle for faith and practice.
