How Lutherans and Pentecostals view Spiritual Gifts

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Lutheran View on Spiritual Gifts:
The Lutheran view on spiritual gifts is based on the idea that all believers possess the Holy Spirit, and therefore have access to spiritual gifts. However, Lutherans tend to be more reserved in their use of spiritual gifts and emphasize the importance of using them in an orderly and controlled manner within the context of the worship service. They also believe that not all spiritual gifts are meant for everyone and that God distributes these gifts as He sees fit for the edification of the church.

Pentecostal View on Spiritual Gifts:
Pentecostals believe that the Holy Spirit is essential to the Christian life and that all believers have access to spiritual gifts. They place a strong emphasis on the gifts of speaking in tongues, prophecy, and healing, and believe that these gifts should be used extensively and publicly in worship services. They also believe that all spiritual gifts are meant for everyone and that God wants to pour out His Spirit on all believers in a tangible way. Pentecostals tend to seek out powerful experiences of the Holy Spirit and place less emphasis on order and control in their worship services.

Bible Verses About Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

1 Peter 4:10-11 “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.”

Romans 12:6-8 “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

1 Corinthians 14:1 “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.”
