How LDS / Mormons and Mennonites view Hairstyles

LDS/Mormon View on Hairstyles

In the LDS/Mormon faith, modesty and cleanliness are emphasized in personal appearance. The church’s official website states that hairstyles should be “clean and neat, avoiding extremes in styles or colors.” Men are encouraged to keep their hair relatively short and well-groomed, while women are asked to avoid “prominent or distracting” haircuts or styles that draw too much attention to themselves.

Mennonite View on Hairstyles

Mennonite beliefs vary depending on the community or church, but in general, Mennonites believe in modesty as a reflection of inner humility and simplicity. Many Mennonite women choose to wear head coverings as a symbol of their faith and submission to God. In terms of hairstyles, Mennonite men and women often opt for simple, practical cuts that don’t draw attention to themselves.

While there are differences in emphasis on specific hairstyles between the LDS/Mormon and Mennonite traditions, both place a high value on modesty and cleanliness in personal appearance. Regardless of religion or community, we can all strive to present our best selves with respect and dignity.

Bible Verses About Hairstyles

LDS / Mormon

1. 1 Corinthians 11:15 – “But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.” This verse suggests that women should have long hair, as it is seen as a sign of glory.

2. Leviticus 19:27 – “You shall not cut the hair on your head round in shape; nor shall you shave off the hair on your beard.” This verse suggests that men should not cut their hair in a particular style, and they should not shave their beard.

3. Numbers 6:5 – “All the days of the vow of his separation no razor shall come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the Lord, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.” This verse suggests that men who take a vow of separation should not cut their hair until the vow is complete.

Mennonite

1. 1 Peter 3:3-4 – “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self.” This verse suggests that one’s beauty should come from within, not from outward adornment like fancy hairstyles.

2. 1 Corinthians 11:14-15 – “Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?” This verse suggests that men should not have long hair, as it is seen as a disgrace, while women should have long hair as it is seen as a sign of glory.

3. Deuteronomy 22:5 – “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.” While not specifically about hairstyles, this verse could be seen as prohibiting men from having hairstyles traditionally associated with women, and vice versa.
