How Baptists and Agnostic / Seculars view Drunkenness

Baptist View on Drunkenness
According to the Baptist faith, drunkenness is a sin because it goes against the teachings of the Bible. In several verses, the Bible warns against the dangers of intoxication and the negative consequences it can have on both the individual and society. Baptists believe that alcohol should be consumed in moderation and that those who cannot control their drinking are in danger of falling into sin.

Agnostic / Secular View on Drunkenness
Agnostics and secular individuals do not necessarily view drunkenness as a sin, but rather as a personal choice that can have negative consequences. While they do not have a religious code to follow, they still recognize the dangers of alcohol abuse and the impact it can have on one’s health, relationships, and overall well-being. For this reason, they may advocate for responsible drinking or even abstaining from alcohol altogether.

Key Differences
The key differences between the Baptist and agnostic/secular views on drunkenness lie in their beliefs about sin and control. Baptists view drunkenness as a sin because it goes against the teachings of the Bible and can lead to other sins such as violence and sexual immorality. They believe that individuals should exercise self-control and avoid alcohol if they cannot drink it responsibly. Agnostics and secular individuals, on the other hand, do not necessarily see drunkenness as a sin but rather as a personal choice that can have negative consequences. They view responsible drinking and self-regulation as important in preventing these negative consequences.

Bible Verses About Drunkenness

Baptist:

Proverbs 20:1 – “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”

Ephesians 5:18 – “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 6:10 – “Nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Agonistic/Secular:

Proverbs 23:29-35 – “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things.”

Galatians 5:21 – “And envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Isaiah 5:11-12 – “Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. They have harps and lyres at their banquets, pipes and timbrels and wine, but they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands.”
