How Anglicans and Agnostic / Seculars view Love

Anglican View on Love:

The Anglican Church sees love as an essential attribute of God and a central component of Christian faith. Love is understood as a self-giving, sacrificial, and unconditional attitude towards others, modeled after the love of Jesus Christ. Anglicans emphasize the importance of love not only in personal relationships but also in social and political contexts, calling for justice and compassion towards all. They also believe that love is the foundation of marriage and family life, and that it should be expressed in a committed and faithful relationship.

Agnostic / Secular View on Love:

Agnostics and secularists may have different views on love, depending on their personal beliefs and values. Generally speaking, love is seen as a human emotion that arises from personal attraction, attachment, or intimacy. It is often described as a positive feeling that brings happiness, fulfillment, and well-being to individuals. However, agnostics and secularists may not see love as related to any particular religious or moral system, and they may not consider it necessary for a meaningful life. They may also emphasize the importance of individual freedom and autonomy in relationships, and reject traditional notions of marriage and family that are based on societal norms or religious beliefs.

Bible Verses About Love

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

1 John 4:7-8 – “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Ephesians 4:2-3 – “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Colossians 3:14 – “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

1 Peter 4:8 – “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
