1. The Story of Barnabas: In the book of Acts, we read about a man named Joseph who was given the nickname Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”) because he went out of his way to encourage and support his fellow believers in Christ. He sold land and gave the proceeds to the apostles, vouched for Saul (later known as Paul) when the other apostles were skeptical of him, and continued to encourage and uplift the early Christian community.
2. The Story of Joshua: When Moses died, Joshua was chosen as the new leader of the Israelites. He was given a daunting task: to lead the people across the Jordan River and conquer the Promised Land. However, God repeatedly told Joshua to be strong and courageous, and that He would be with him every step of the way. Joshua was encouraged by God’s promise, and went on to lead the Israelites to victory.
3. The Story of David and Jonathan: David and Jonathan were close friends and allies, with Jonathan even risking his own life to protect David from his father, Saul. In 1 Samuel 23:16-17, we read that “Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you.'” Jonathan’s words of encouragement helped David to keep going despite the many trials and obstacles he faced.
4. The Story of Paul and Timothy: Paul was a mentor to Timothy, encouraging and guiding him as he grew in his faith and ministry. In 2 Timothy 1:6-7, Paul writes to Timothy: “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” Paul’s encouragement helped Timothy to become a strong leader and teacher in the early Christian church.
