The Bible Vs. Research on Pets.

The data on Pets:

Research and the Bible both seem to agree on the fact that pets can bring tremendous benefits to their owners. For example, according to a study published by the National Institutes of Health, pets can help lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and even decrease the risk of heart disease. Additionally, the Bible notes the positive impact that animals can have on one’s mental and emotional well-being, as evidenced in Proverbs 12:10 which states, “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal” (New International Version).

Another way in which research and the Bible appear to be aligned is in their recognition of the importance of responsible pet ownership. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), being a responsible pet owner includes providing proper nutrition, exercise, and veterinary care for one’s pet, as well as ensuring that they are properly trained and socialized. Similarly, the Bible encourages people to treat animals with kindness and compassion, as seen in passages such as Proverbs 27:23-27 which speaks to the care and upkeep of livestock.

Ultimately, while there may be some differences in beliefs and practices surrounding pets among different faith communities, research and the Bible both recognize the value of responsible and loving pet ownership. By prioritizing the well-being of our animal companions, we can reap the many benefits that they have to offer and honor the God-given role that they play in our lives.
