Both research and the Bible agree that depression can have significant physical, emotional, and spiritual impacts on individuals.
Research findings suggest that depression is associated with decreased brain function, including altered activity in the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Depression also affects the body’s stress response system, leading to an increase in cortisol levels and changes in heart rate variability (Harvard Health Publishing, 2019).
In the Bible, the psalmist David describes the physical and emotional symptoms of depression in Psalm 6:2-3, “Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint; heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long?” The prophet Elijah also experienced symptoms of depression in 1 Kings 19, including fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, and feelings of hopelessness.
Both research and the Bible emphasize the importance of seeking support and treatment for depression. Research shows that therapy and medication can be effective treatments for depression, and the Bible encourages individuals to seek refuge in God during times of emotional distress (Psalm 91:2).
