God's Mercy in the Gospels
Matthew 5:7 — Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 9:13 — But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Matthew 12:7 — If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.
Luke 6:36 — Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Luke 10:37 — The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
The Call to Show Mercy
Matthew 18:33 — Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’
Luke 6:38 — Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Luke 10:30-32 — In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
John 8:10-11 — Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
The Example of Jesus' Mercy
Matthew 14:14 — When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Mark 1:41 — Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
Luke 7:13 — When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
John 11:35 — Jesus wept.
Exodus 34:6 — And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,
Psalm 103:8 — The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
Jonah 4:2 — He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.
Matthew 20:30-34 — Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
Luke 15:20-24 — So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
