The Power of Words – a James 3 Story
Sophie had always been known for her sharp tongue. She could cut a person down to size with just a few words. It had got her in trouble in the past, but she could never seem to stop herself. Until one day, something happened that would change her forever.
Sophie had just started a new job at a marketing firm. She was excited to be working with such a prestigious company, but she quickly found that her coworkers were less than welcoming. They talked behind her back and excluded her from team meetings. Sophie felt hurt and angry, and she couldn’t help but lash out with her words.
One day, during a team brainstorming session, Sophie found herself in a heated argument with one of her coworkers. She didn’t even remember what they were arguing about, but before she knew it, she had said something truly hurtful. Her coworker’s face fell, and Sophie could see the hurt and betrayal in their eyes.
Sophie went home that night feeling terrible. She knew that her words had hurt someone deeply, and she didn’t know how to make it right. That’s when she remembered something her grandmother had told her when she was a child. "The tongue is a small thing, but it can do great harm. Be careful with your words, Sophie."
Sophie knew she had to apologize, but she didn’t know how. She went to bed that night feeling hopeless and ashamed.
The next day at work, Sophie found a note on her desk from the coworker she had hurt. It was a simple note, but it meant everything to Sophie. It said, "I forgive you." That simple act of kindness and forgiveness changed everything for Sophie. She realized the power of her words, both for good and for bad.
From that day forward, Sophie made a conscious effort to speak words of kindness and encouragement. She apologized to anyone she had hurt in the past and made amends wherever she could. And in doing so, she found that her relationships with her coworkers and friends grew stronger than ever before.
Sophie realized that her words had power, and she wanted to use that power for good. She began to speak up against injustice and stand up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves. And in doing so, she saw the true power of her words to effect change in the world.
As James 3:8-9 says, "But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God." Sophie had learned the hard way that her words had the power to hurt or heal, and she was determined to use that power for good.
