Crumbs of Faith – a Matthew 15 Story
Mary was a single mother, raising her two young children in a small village outside of Jerusalem. She worked hard as a seamstress to provide for her family, but life was tough. Her youngest child, David, had been born deaf and mute, leaving Mary with the added burden of caring for a child with special needs.
One day, Mary heard that Jesus was coming to their village. She had heard stories of the miracles he had performed, and she knew that he was the only one who could help her son. Mary gathered her children and made her way to the village square, where a crowd had already gathered.
As Jesus began to speak, Mary pushed her way through the crowd, desperate to get close to him. But the disciples saw her and tried to push her away, telling her that Jesus was too busy to see her. But Mary was determined, and she fell to her knees before Jesus, pleading with him to heal her son.
Jesus looked at her with compassion and said, "It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs." Mary was taken aback by his words. Was he calling her and her son dogs?
But Jesus continued, "Yes, Lord," she said, "even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table."
With those words, Jesus was moved by Mary’s faith. He reached out and touched her son, and in that moment, David was healed. Mary and her children were overjoyed, and they praised God for his goodness.
In that moment, Mary understood the power of faith. She knew that even the smallest bit of faith could move mountains. She realized that it wasn’t about how much faith she had, but rather about the One in whom she placed her faith.
As they walked back to their home, Mary couldn’t stop thanking God for his goodness. She knew that her life would never be the same. She knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, she could trust in God to see her through.
Matthew 15:28 – Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted."
