Title: Speaking Words of Faith and Courage

Topic: Monsters and Fear

Objective: To teach young children the power of speaking words of faith and courage in the face of monsters and fears.

Introduction:
Have you ever been afraid of monsters under your bed or in your closet? It’s okay to feel scared sometimes, but did you know that you can speak words of faith and courage to overcome your fears? Today, we will learn about monsters and fear and how we can use our words to be brave.

Lesson:
1. Define what a monster is and ask the children if they have ever been afraid of monsters.

2. Read Psalm 27:1 – “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Explain that this verse means that if we trust in God, we can be brave because He is with us and will protect us.

3. Ask the children to brainstorm some words of fear, such as scared, frightened, and terrified. Then, ask them to think of words of courage, such as brave, strong, and confident.

4. Write the words of fear and courage on a whiteboard or piece of paper. Take turns asking the children to choose a word of fear and then a word of courage to replace it with. For example, if a child says they are scared, ask them to replace that word with “brave.”

5. Talk about how speaking words of courage can help us overcome our fears. Encourage the children to speak words of faith and courage when they feel afraid, such as “I am brave,” “God is with me,” and “I am not afraid.”

6. Pray with the children and ask God to help them speak words of faith and courage when they feel afraid.

Conclusion:
Remember, monsters and fears can be scary, but we can speak words of faith and courage to be brave. Trust in God and speak words of courage and you will overcome your fears.

Object Lesson

Props:
– A stuffed monster toy
– A mirror
– A small jar filled with colorful beads or marbles

Presentation:
1. Begin by introducing the stuffed monster toy and asking the children if they have ever been afraid of monsters. Allow them to share their experiences and feelings.
2. Hold up the mirror and ask the children what they see. Encourage them to describe themselves and their unique qualities.
3. Explain that when we speak words of fear and doubt, we give power to the monsters and make them seem bigger and scarier than they really are. But when we speak words of faith and courage, we remember who we are and the strength we possess.
4. Pour the jar of beads or marbles into a container and explain that each bead represents a positive word or affirmation. Invite the children to help you come up with words of faith and courage, such as “I am brave,” “I am strong,” and “I am loved.”
5. As you say each word, have a child drop a bead into the container. Watch as the beads pile up, symbolizing the power of speaking positive words.
6. End by encouraging the children to speak words of faith and courage whenever they feel afraid or uncertain. Remind them that they are each unique and valuable, and that no monster or fear can ever take that away.

Craft Idea

Monster Handprint Craft

Supplies:
– Construction paper (brown, green, and any other colors)
– Scissors
– Glue
– Black marker
– Paint (orange, green, or any bright colors)
– Paintbrush
– Paper plate

Instructions:

1. Begin by painting the child’s hand with the desired color paint, then have them press their hand onto the brown construction paper, making sure to show all five fingers.

2. Allow the paint to dry, then cut around the handprint to make a monster shape.

3. Cut out small circles from the green construction paper to make eyes, and glue them onto the monster’s face.

4. Use the black marker to draw a mouth and other details onto the monster’s face.

5. Cut out small triangles or pointed shapes from any other color construction paper and glue them onto the top of the monster’s head to make hair or horns.

6. Finally, write a positive phrase or verse onto the monster’s body, such as “I am strong and courageous” or “God is with me.”

This craft helps tie into the lesson by showing children that they can overcome their fears and be courageous, and that they are never alone because God is with them. It also allows them to express their creativity and have fun while learning more about their faith.
