Key Verse: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” – Deuteronomy 31:6

Lesson Objective: Through this lesson, children will learn that with God’s help, they can overcome their fears and be courageous.

Opening Prayer: Dear God, please help us learn to be brave and overcome our fears. Help us to trust in you and know that you are always with us. Amen.

Introduction: Ask the children if they have ever felt afraid before. Share a time when you were scared and thought that you couldn’t do something. Talk how God is always with us and can help us when we are afraid.

Bible Story: Read the story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1-50). Reinforce the point that David was able to conquer his fear because he had faith in God. God gave him the courage he needed to face Goliath.

Discussion Questions:

– What was David afraid of?
– What did David do to overcome his fear?
– How did God give David the courage he needed?
– Have you ever faced a fear and overcome it? How did you do it?

Memory Verse: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” – Deuteronomy 31:6

Activity: “Be Brave” Craft – have each child create a poster or drawing that says “Be Brave” with images or words that remind them that God is with them and they can be courageous.

Closing Prayer: Dear God, thank you for being with us always. Help us to trust in you and be brave when we are afraid. Amen.

Conclusion: Emphasize that with God’s help, we can overcome our fears and be brave. Encourage the children to trust in God and ask for his help when they are feeling afraid.

Object Lesson

Title: Be Brave: Learning Courage through Christ

Audience: Young Children (ages 4-7)

Objective: To teach children that through Christ, they can conquer their fears and be brave.

Props:
– A toy sailboat
– A small plastic figurine (such as a Lego person or small action figure)
– A bowl of water
– A picture of Jesus calming the storm
– A Bible

Presentation:
1. Begin by asking the children if any of them have ever been afraid of something. Allow them to share their experiences and feelings.
2. Show the children a toy sailboat and explain that just like the boat, we can sometimes feel small and powerless in the face of our fears.
3. Bring out the small plastic figurine and place it in the boat. Explain that just as the figurine is in the boat, God is always with us, even when we feel scared and alone.
4. Fill a bowl with water and ask the children what might happen if the boat were placed in the water. Allow them to make predictions and observations as you place the boat in the bowl.
5. Use a picture of Jesus calming the storm to demonstrate to the children that just as Jesus calmed the storm and protected his disciples, he can also calm our fears and protect us.
6. Finally, read a relevant Bible passage (e.g. Psalm 56:3 – “When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”) and encourage the children to repeat it together.

Conclusion:
Remind the children that no matter what fears they may face, they can be brave because God is always with them. Encourage them to trust in him and to pray for courage whenever they feel afraid.
