To be omnipotent means to possess unlimited power or authority. As an evangelical Christian, we believe that there is only one true God who is all-powerful and is the creator of the universe. In the Bible, God refers to himself as the Almighty, indicating that he is not only powerful but also all-knowing and all-present.
The concept of God’s omnipotence is best illustrated in the book of Genesis, where we see God creating the universe in just six days. Genesis 1:1 states that "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This verse highlights the incredible power and authority that God possesses. He spoke the word, and everything came into existence.
Another example of God’s omnipotence is seen when he parted the Red Sea for the Israelites to pass through, and then caused the waters to close back up on the pursuing Egyptians. Exodus 14:21-22 says, "Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left."
God’s omnipotence is also seen in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. As Christians, we believe that Jesus was fully God and fully man. He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. Romans 1:4 says that Jesus was "declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead."
As evangelical Christians, we believe that God’s omnipotence is not only displayed in his ability to create the universe, part the Red Sea, or raise Jesus from the dead, but it is also seen in his ability to control the events of our lives. We believe that God is sovereign and that he is in control of everything that happens in this world. Romans 8:28 tells us that "we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."
