Question: What does God look like? (Evangelical Christian)

As an evangelical Christian, I believe that God is a spiritual being who is not bound by human limitations and therefore does not have a physical appearance. However, throughout the Bible, there are descriptions and depictions of God’s glory and power that give us insight into His nature and character.

One of the most vivid descriptions of God’s glory is found in the book of Ezekiel, where the prophet has a vision of God’s throne. He describes seeing a brilliant light, like a rainbow, encircling a throne. Above the throne, he saw what appeared to be a figure like a man, glowing with a bright light. This passage emphasizes the majesty and holiness of God, but does not give a physical description of what God looks like.

Another passage that provides insight into God’s character is found in the Gospel of John. In John 4:24, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." This statement reinforces the spiritual nature of God and reinforces the idea that God cannot be confined to a physical form.

Despite the lack of a physical appearance, we have been given the ability to experience God’s presence through the Holy Spirit. In John 14:16-17, Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to dwell with us and guide us. This presence is described as a "helper," one who will comfort us and give us peace. The Holy Spirit provides a tangible experience of God’s love and grace, even though we cannot physically see Him.

Ultimately, our understanding of God’s nature and character is limited by our human perspective. In Isaiah 55:8-9, God says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways… For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." While we may not be able to fully comprehend God’s nature, we can trust in His goodness and love for us.

In conclusion, as an evangelical Christian, I believe that God does not have a physical appearance. While there are descriptions of His glory and power throughout the Bible, we must rely on the Holy Spirit to experience His presence and gain understanding of His character. God’s nature is beyond our human comprehension, but we can trust in His love and sovereignty.
