Question: how does the son not know the father’s will if they are one God? (Evangelical Christian)

As an Evangelical Christian, I believe that while the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are indeed one God, they also have distinct roles within the Godhead. The concept of the Trinity is complex and can be challenging to fully comprehend, but it teaches that God exists as three persons in one divine being.

When Jesus, the Son of God, became incarnate and took on human form, He willingly submitted Himself to the will of the Father. While they are inseparable in their essence, Jesus, in His human nature, operated within the limitations of that human form. This included voluntarily limiting His divine knowledge and attributes in order to fully experience humanity. In His earthly ministry, Jesus relied on the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit to reveal the Father’s will to Him.

This is evident in various passages of the Bible. For instance, in Matthew 24:36, Jesus says, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” Here, Jesus, speaking as the Son, acknowledges that there are certain aspects of the Father’s plan that are not revealed to Him in His human capacity.

This does not imply any inferiority or lack of deity on the part of the Son, but rather highlights the voluntary submission of Jesus to the Father’s will while in His earthly form. It demonstrates the humility and obedience of Jesus as He fulfills His mission to become the perfect sacrifice for humanity’s sins.

In summary, as an Evangelical Christian, I believe that while the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one God, they have distinct roles within the Godhead. Jesus, as the Son, willingly limited His divine knowledge while in His human form to fully experience and fulfill the Father’s will. This does not diminish His divinity but rather highlights His humility and obedience in carrying out the redemption of humanity.
