Ruth 3:1 PlayCharacters:
Naomi – an older woman
Ruth – a young widow
Boaz – a wealthy landowner
Setting:
A field in Bethlehem
Act 1
Naomi: (to Ruth) My dear child, it has been months since we returned to Bethlehem, but we still have no means of security.
Ruth: (concerned) What do you mean, mother?
Naomi: Our family land was sold and we have no money left. As widows, we have no one to provide for us unless we marry again.
Ruth: (determined) Then let me go and gather grain in the fields to provide for us.
Naomi: (grateful) May the Lord bless you, my child. Be careful not to go to any other field except Boaz’s for he is a kind man.
Ruth: (full of hope) I will go to Boaz’s field and trust in the Lord’s provision.
Act 2
Boaz: (to his workers) May the Lord be with you.
Workers: (bowing) May the Lord bless you, Boaz.
Boaz: (noticing Ruth) Who is that young woman gathering grain in my field?
Worker: (proudly) She is Ruth the Moabite.
Boaz: (impressed) She is a hard worker. Make sure she is safe and offer her extra grain.
Act 3
Naomi: (excited) Ruth, I have heard that Boaz is a kinsman-redeemer. If we can convince him to redeem us, it will be a path to security!
Ruth: (hopeful) How should I go about it?
Naomi: (scheming) Tonight is a feast among the workers in Boaz’s field. Dress up, perfume yourself, and go to him when he lies down to sleep. Lift the corner of his blanket over his feet and say, “Spread the corner of your blanket over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer.”
Act 4
Boaz: (waking up to see Ruth) Who is there?
Ruth: (timidly) It is I, Ruth.
Boaz: (surprised) What are you doing here?
Ruth: (boldly) Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are my kinsman-redeemer.
Boaz: (speaking kindly) You are a woman of noble character. I will do all that you ask. But know that there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I.
Act 5
Boaz: (meeting with the closer kinsman-redeemer) There is a piece of land that belonged to our relative, Elimelech. As his closest kinsman, the right to redeem it belongs to you. Will you redeem it?
Kinsman-redeemer: (overwhelmed) Yes, I will redeem it.
Boaz: There is also Ruth, the Moabite woman, who came back from Moab with Naomi. Naomi is selling the land that belonged to our relative Elimelech, and I thought I should bring it to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line.
Kinsman-redeemer: I will not redeem it. You redeem it.
Boaz: (joyful) Then let it be known today that you have acquired Ruth the Moabite as your wife. She will bear you a son and your family line will continue.
Act 6
Naomi: (elated) Praise be to the Lord, who redeems us! You have done a wonderful thing for us, my son.
Boaz: (excitedly) And I will do even more for you, Naomi. I will marry Ruth and provide for you both.
Ruth: (overjoyed) You have been kind to me beyond measure. May the Lord bless you abundantly for your kindness.
