In Revelation 20, John sees an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the abyss and a great chain. The devil is bound and thrown into the abyss for a thousand years, during which time Christ and his followers reign on thrones. After the thousand years, Satan is released and gathers an army to fight against Christ and his followers. However, they are defeated and Satan is thrown into the lake of fire along with death and Hades. John then sees a great white throne and the dead are judged according to their deeds. Anyone whose name is not found in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire.
