In Luke 14, Jesus attends a meal at the house of a Pharisee where he heals a man with dropsy. Jesus then tells a parable about a man who invited guests to a banquet, but they all made excuses not to come. The man then invites the poor, crippled, blind, and lame to his banquet instead. Jesus also encourages his followers to count the cost of discipleship and to forsake everything to follow him. He ends by saying that whoever does not take up their cross and follow him cannot be his disciple.
