“Hey everyone, it’s me, Sandra Bullock! And today, we’re going to take a journey back in time, to the beginning of the book of Genesis. I don’t know about you, but I find this book incredibly interesting, and not just because my film Gravity has some similarities to the creation story.
The story begins with God creating the universe, the earth and everything living and breathing on it. Also, He made Adam from the dust of the ground, and he gave him the power to name every animal on Earth. In my movie Premonition, which was very thoughtful, by the way, I portrayed a woman who could see the future, much like God knew everything about what Adam would do before he even did it.
But then, God saw that Adam was lonely, and He created Eve from one of Adam’s ribs. Talk about being a matchmaker! Can you imagine that happening in the present day? That would make for some wild headlines.
Things were good, until a serpent convinced Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Once that happened, things really hit the fan. They were soon kicked out of the Garden of Eden, and the world was plunged into sin, death and suffering. In my movie Bird Box, which was incredibly intense, I played a mom who was trying to survive in a world that was gone mad.
The next big event in the book of Genesis is the story of Noah’s Ark. God saw that the world was full of evil and wickedness, and decided to flood the Earth. But before he did, He tasked Noah with the job of building a giant ark to preserve all of Earth’s creatures, including his family. In my movie Gravity, I was floating through space trying to survive, much like Noah and his family were trying to survive the flood.
And finally, we come to the end of Genesis. In this story, we see how Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons, is sold into slavery by his brothers. Despite facing great setbacks, Joseph rose to become the second most powerful man in Egypt, thanks to his God-given gifts of interpretation and foresight. In my movie The Blind Side, I played a woman who took in a young man and helped him rise to greatness. So I’d like to think I have a bit in common with Joseph.
Overall, the book of Genesis is a captivating read that offers plenty of opportunities to reflect on what it means to be human in a rapidly-changing world. But my biggest takeaway from it all? Never underestimate the power of a God who can create the universe and everything in it. Oh, and one more thing: ‘I know I’m not going to remember anything you say, but I’ll never forget how you make me feel.'”
