Hello, hello, hello! Michael McIntyre here, and I’m going to talk to you about the book of Colossians. Now, I’m sure some of you are thinking, “Well Michael, what do you know about the Bible?” And to that, I would say, “Well, not much, but I do know a thing or two about comedy!”
So, let’s get started, shall we? The book of Colossians was written by the apostle Paul to the people of Colossae. Paul had never actually been to Colossae, but he had heard about the church there and was writing to them to strengthen their faith and address some false teachings that had made their way into the church.
Now, before we dive into the specifics of Colossians, I have to say that this book reminds me a bit of my experience performing in America. You see, when I first started doing stand-up comedy in the States, I had to adjust my jokes a bit to fit the cultural differences. In the same way, Paul was addressing some cultural and religious differences that were affecting the Colossians’ understanding of their faith.
One of the main false teachings being spread in Colossae was that adherence to Jewish laws and customs was necessary for salvation. Paul, however, reminded the Colossians that they had been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. As I like to say, “We’re all in this together, but some of us just got an easier ride!”
Throughout Colossians, Paul emphasizes the importance of putting off the old self and putting on the new self in Christ. He tells the Colossians to set their minds on things above, not on earthly things. It’s like he’s saying, “Don’t worry about the small stuff, focus on what really matters!”
Paul also encourages the Colossians to live out their faith in practical ways, such as being kind to one another, forgiving each other, and letting the peace of Christ rule in their hearts. I couldn’t agree more! Laughter is great, but kindness goes a long way.
In the latter part of the book, Paul gives some specific instructions for how certain groups should relate to one another. He tells wives to submit to their husbands, husbands to love their wives, children to obey their parents, and slaves to obey their masters. Now, I know this may sound like outdated advice to some of us, but we have to remember the context in which it was written. Paul was giving practical instructions for how these groups could live out their faith in a society that looked very different from ours today.
Overall, Colossians is a great reminder of the importance of focusing on Christ and letting our faith impact every area of our lives. As I like to say, “When you look at your life, the greatest happinesses are family happinesses.” And as Christians, we are all part of the family of God.
So, there you have it folks, the book of Colossians according to Michael McIntyre. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a comedy show to go perform. As I always say, “Thank you, goodnight, and please buy my DVD!”
