Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were sitting in their treehouse, trying to decide what Bible story they should learn about next. Simon suggested the book of Zephaniah, and the other two agreed.
They opened up their Bible and began to read about the prophet Zephaniah, who lived during the reign of King Josiah in Judah. Zephaniah warned the people that God was angry with them because they were worshipping other gods and engaging in sinful behavior.
The chipmunks were fascinated by the vivid language used in the book, such as when Zephaniah wrote, “The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there.”
As they continued reading, they learned that God was going to punish the people for their sins, but that he would also save a remnant of them. The chipmunks were impressed by Zephaniah’s message of both judgment and hope.
However, they were also a bit scared by some of the descriptions of God’s wrath, such as when Zephaniah wrote that “neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the Lord.”
After finishing the book, Alvin turned to the others and said, “Well, I guess we’d better start worshipping the right God if we don’t want to face his wrath!” Simon and Theodore chuckled, but they knew Alvin had a point.
The chipmunks may have been animated characters, but they still understood the importance of living a good and righteous life. As Zephaniah wrote, “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the Lord.”
