The High Priest’s Robe – a Hebrews 5 Craft
Introduction
In Hebrews 5, we learn about the importance of the high priest in ancient Israel. The high priest was responsible for offering sacrifices for the people’s sins and acting as a mediator between God and his people. One of the high priest’s most important garments was his robe. This craft will teach you how to make a miniature version of the high priest’s robe.
Materials
- A plain white or cream cloth
- Gold or yellow ribbon
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
Instructions
- Cut the cloth into a rectangular shape that is about twice as wide as it is tall.
- Fold the cloth in half vertically.
- Cut a small slit in the center of the fold, about halfway down the height of the cloth.
- Cut two more slits on either side of the center slit, about two-thirds of the way down from the top of the cloth. These slits should be parallel to the center slit and about the same length as the center slit.
- Thread a piece of ribbon through the center slit and tie a knot at the top of the cloth to secure it in place. This ribbon will be used to tie the robe closed around the high priest’s waist.
- Thread a piece of ribbon through each of the side slits and tie a knot at the top of the cloth to secure them in place. These ribbons will be used to tie the sleeves of the robe closed around the high priest’s wrists.
- Sew the edges of the cloth together to create the sides of the robe.
- Cut a piece of ribbon to the length of the bottom of the robe and sew it to the bottom of the cloth to create the hem of the robe.
- Cut a few small pieces of ribbon and sew them to the front and back of the robe to create decorative accents.
