"Fishers of Men" – a Matthew 4 Craft

Materials Needed

  • Popsicle sticks (6 for each craft)
  • String
  • Glue
  • Markers or paint
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Take 4 popsicle sticks and glue them together in a square shape to form the base of the craft.
  2. Take the remaining 2 popsicle sticks and glue them diagonally across the square, forming an X shape.
  3. Cut a length of string and tie it to the intersection of the two diagonal sticks.
  4. Draw or paint a picture of a fishing boat on the base of the craft.
  5. Write the words "Fishers of Men" on the top of the craft.
  6. Attach a loop of string to the top of the craft for hanging.

Explanation

This craft is based on the story in Matthew 4 where Jesus calls his first disciples, Simon and Andrew, and tells them that he will make them "fishers of men". The popsicle stick base represents a boat, and the crossed sticks with string symbolize a fishing net. The craft can be hung as a reminder of Jesus’s call to share the good news with others and to lead them to Christ.
